Grignolino, the queen's wine...
- Casa Nebiolo
Portacomaro and most of all Migliandolo, are the best areas for the production of this wine, which is not very famous, but really appreciated by the wine experts.
The most famous Asti's wine is the Barbera, but we can offer you a large variety of DOC and DOCG wines, one of this being the Grignolino, which in the last years has really improved his quality and his position as well.
At the end of the 19 th century the Grignolino was considered one of the best Piedmont's grape, loved and appreciated by the most. In addition, King Umberto I preferred it to any other wine on his table.
It is a delicate grape which has a low yields, this is why at the beginning of the 20 th century his production started to decrease.
Grignolino makes wine with very fruity aromas, often with floral notes and hints of citrus or spice. The wines tend to take on shades of orange, rather than purple. Grignolino is produced as rosé as often as red wine, both of which are usually best enjoyed in their youth. Their bright acidity makes a good complement to foods with high fat content.
You can taste excellent Grignolino wines at the BOTTEGA DEL GRIGNOLINO, a winery with restaurant made in the tower of the old defensive wall of Portacomaro. You can visit local wine cellars as well.
The BOTTEGA DEL GRIGNOLINO was founded by the regional administrations together with province, and it gathers all the local producers of Grignolino d'Asti, Barbera e Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato and other DOC wine of Portacomaro.
The Bottega has a precious wine cellar carved in sandstone, an extraordinary place where to conserve bottles.
In 1968 Veronelli defined the Grignolino a "Anarchist and individualist" wine, just to underline his strong personality; and Mario Soldati: The Grignolino is for sure the most delicate of the Piedmont's wines. that is to say that it is not suited to the brutality of daily consumism."
Now the Grignolino is back to the scene, appreciated and loved by the wine experts, and called the "Queen's wine" during the wine fest that take place in Migliandolo in May. The Grignolino is anarchist but also versatile.
Many people like to combine it with fishes and this marriage has already been formalized and promoted by the ATL; in the matter of fact this wine is fresh as a Novello (young) wine, but full body.
Somebody drink it as an aperitif, fresh, instead of red or rosé wines, but it is an ideal union with salami meats , antipasto dishes , soups , white meats and fetter dishes. From the scientific point of view this grape is rich of tannins (scientific name polyphenols) a strong ossidant which helps to fight against cardiocirculatory system's diseases. Popular medicine was right, when saying that drinking with moderations could be healthy.
The first scientific research were made in the university of Cornell and Harvard, United States, and now we have a lot of confirmations from all over the world.
Something curios: its appealing name seems almost certainly to have been derived from "grignole," a term in the local dialect that refers to the abundance of seeds in the Grignolino grapes.
